Role Overview
The Head of SHEQ will report directly to the Managing Director and will be responsible for leading the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality function across the company. The purpose of the role is to ensure our systems are implemented, monitored and audited in line with Network Rail standards, internal requirements and all applicable legislation.
This is a senior role within the business and will require someone who can operate at both strategic and operational level: supporting the Board, engaging with clients and stakeholders, and maintaining a visible presence with operational teams.
The role will include responsibility for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001/SSIP, RISQS and Principal Contractor Licence requirements, as well as SHEQ strategy, accident and incident investigation, assurance activity, supplier approval, risk management, Board reporting and supporting the wider business with CPPs, WPPs, task briefings and risk assessments.
Package
The salary range is £85,000 to £90,000, depending on experience, capability and overall fit.

The role is based from our Colchester head office, but regular travel will be required across our operational locations, client sites and project areas.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone with strong SHEQ leadership experience in rail, major infrastructure, civil engineering, utilities or another highly regulated environment. Rail experience is important, as the successful candidate will need to understand the standards, compliance expectations and operational pressures of the sector.
Essential experience and attributes include:
- Proven experience in a senior SHEQ role
- Strong knowledge of Railway and Network Rail legislation, compliance and regulations
- Experience with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001
- Accident investigation experience
- CDM knowledge
- Ability to influence stakeholders from frontline teams through to Board level
- Experience producing and analysing management information
- Strong leadership, communication and decision-making skills
- Budgeting, forecasting and risk management experience
The role profile also identifies the following competencies for our PCL:
- NEBOSH / NCRQ Diploma or NVQ Level 5 equivalent
- Chartered Member of IOSH ideally
- ISEP membership, Practitioner or Full / Chartered
- PTS desirable
- Lead Auditor desirable
- COSS desirable
