Job Description

Signalling Manager required to be based in London. Permanent position paying £55k + benefits
Your job purpose will be:
• Ensure the safety of all Signalling assets and through this, the railway’s customers and neighbours.
• Ensure the safety of all Track and Stations staff and contractors and to contribute to the safety..
• Manage the Signalling team in delivering excellent customer service.
• Ensure that professional engineering standards are applied to all maintenance activities.
• As a member of the Engineering Directorate, participate in the formulation of strategy and direction of the business to meet the objectives of the company in the delivery of the franchise targets.
• The jobholder should be educated to HND/HNC level, with excellent communication and proven management skills. He or she must be capable of communicating at Senior Manager and operative level with equal clarity.
• The jobholder will be an experienced Signalling Engineer with a thorough knowledge of railway Signalling systems.
• The jobholder will have excellent leadership and influencing skills with experience of operating at Senior Manager level and experienced in general management skills.
• The ability to create a vision, to communicate this to the team, and motivate them to achieve the vision, is an essential skill for the job.
• Confident, persuasive and professional approach.
• The ability to maintain confidentiality and display tact, diplomacy and discretion at all times.
• Flexibility to meet requirements of shift workers.
• Reliable and Punctual.
• Establish a strong customer service culture within the team, to place at the leading edge in urban public transport customer service.
• Determine, plan and implement the maintenance strategies and processes and establish a supervisory team to ensure their delivery.
• Deliver the financial targets set for the business and for the Signalling team.
• Create a working environment that motivates all employees and is consistent with the client’s values.
• Make sure processes are in place to ensure all key tasks are allocated to suitably qualified and skilled personnel and plan the succession for all staff to ensure there is no interruption to the business caused by lack of suitable resource.

Nature & Scope
1.1 The Signalling Manager works with the Signalling team to formulate maintenance strategy to manage and control all engineering, maintenance and project activity within the signalling area.
1.2 The Signalling Manager works for the General Manager Signalling Systems and assists in the formulation of strategy to manage and control the department.
1.3 The jobholder takes prime responsibility for safety within the Signalling team, supported by S&T Team Leaders.
1.4 The jobholder leads the Signalling team and in this role is responsible for all aspects of the Company’s technical delivery in this area.
1.5 During periods of absence and peak workload, the Signalling Manager role is supported by the Signalling Engineer and vice versa.
1.6 The Signalling Manager is responsible for the day to day management of the signalling teams and those services relating to the assets within that area, and the associated interfaces. This may require a flexible attitude to hours worked and could involve unsocial hours working.
Decision Making
• The jobholder makes decisions on financial and contractual commitments within the delegated authority levels which are set out.
• The jobholder is also responsible for the appointment of all supervisors and staff to the Signalling team.
• The jobholder is responsible for all safety and technical decisions in the Signalling Department.
• Financial decisions within the allocated level of financial responsibility.
• Assignment, Review & Approval of Work
• The Signalling and Telecommunications Manager agrees engineering and maintenance strategies with the Signalling and Response General Manager. He or she is judged on the success in meeting committed operational and financial deliverables, and on softer factors such as staff morale, the development of management skills in his or her team, and Client satisfaction.
• Day to day work is generally self assigned, being determined by the operation, maintenance, assurance and project activities.
• Specific medium and longer term objectives are set during regular meetings with the General Manager Signalling Systems.
• Work is reviewed and approved by the General Manager Signalling Systems.
• Any other tasks set by or agreed by General Manager Signalling Systems.
• Controlling Work Performance Responsibilities
• Develop and motivate your staff to help them perform to their best ability.
• Identify and manage poor performance.
• Review staff performance through the Annual Appraisal system and set structured objectives after consultation.
